How to exit your Windmills with ease

If you take a class with me IRL you'll likely hear me say 'it's not over until it's over' meaning ... you're not finished until your feet have reached the mat and you've safely stepped off of it.

Oftentimes injuries, silk burns, slips and trips occur in the 'in-between' moments. We get out of skill haphazardly. We celebrate too soon and lose focus. Or, we don't spend nearly the same amount of time learning how to get out of a skill as we do getting into it.

When it comes to exiting your Windmills all of the above can apply! Whether you'd like to take your Windmill rotations down to the mat or do one or two and stay mid-air, you need to know how to get out smoothly.

At the end of your Windmill, you arrive back your S-Wrap - I'd suggest wrapping your S-Wrap low and give both options below a go!

The main mistake is forgetting to pass the tail behind you prior to unhooking your knee, it turns into a tummy-crushing mess!

Click below for a video breakdown.

Exit Option #1 Exit to the mat & in the air

Prior to exiting pass the tail behind you to your hooked knee side. Reach above your knee with the same hand to the knee that is hooked and under your knee with your opposite hand. Straighten your hooked knee, release your top hand to allow your leg to pass and quickly re-grip. Lower your legs down with control, unwind the wrap and step on the tail if you're in the air or to the mat if you're low to the mat.

Exit Option #2 - Exit to the mat

Prior to exiting pass the tail behind you to your hooked knee side. Reach above your knee with the same hand to the knee that is hooked and under your knee with your opposite hand. As you extend your hooked knee continue to pull the tail to the side for support, step down with control.

In the Windmill Method, we dive deep into the technique of windmills, an array of S-wrap entries, at-home workouts that target your 'windmilling muscles' and more.
