Technique Tip: Magic Steps Descent

In this tip, we'll break down a beautiful and captivating Int/Adv descent called Magic Steps. This skill blends an opposite knee hook with precise foot placement and a controlled, inverted tail walk-down. Once you find your rhythm, it truly lives up to its name!

Before attempting, ensure you have a strong opposite knee hook and that both your pike position and shoulders are thoroughly warmed up to set yourself up for success. As always, practice new skills low to the mat to keep safety a top priority in your training.

See below for a video & step-by-step breakdown.

Step 1: Opposite Knee Hook

  1. Begin by hooking one knee (e.g., right knee) on the fabric.

  2. Ensure it’s an opposite knee hook, meaning the tail is on the opposite side of your body to knee that is hooked.

  3. The arm on the hooked knee side (e.g., right hand for right knee) releases and swims behind you to grab the tail (warm-up your shoulders for this part).

Step 2: Pike and Wrap

  1. Pike your free leg forward.

  2. Wrap the tail over your foot from big toe to baby toe side.

  3. Ensure the tail sits snugly on the foot for control during the descent.

Step 3: Begin the Descent

  1. Release the hooked knee, pike your leg forward and step on the tail beneath your opposite foot.

  2. The top leg comes around the outside of the silk (not between your other leg and the silk.).

  3. Turn the leg and foot outward for better space and control.

Step 4: Smooth and Controlled Steps

  1. Carefully walk down the tail, stepping with control.

  2. Spot the tail as you walk hands down as well for added stability.

Step 5: Exiting the Move

  1. When ready to exit, grab the tail close to your hip and hook your opposite knee (e.g., left knee if holding the tail with your right hand).

  2. From here, you have two options:

    • Back Balance Exit: Transition into a back balance.

    • Same Side Climb Exit: Climb above your knee, press hips forward and swim the tail behind your back for a clean exit.

Pro Tips:

  • Keep your legs and feet horizontal throughout the descent. If they point upward too much, the skill can feel unstable and precarious.

  • Make sure the wrap goes from big toe to baby toe side for secure footing.

  • This descent can put pressure on your upper inner thigh, so take breaks as needed. To avoid fabric burns, wear thick leggings or consider doubling them up for extra protection.

Take your time, learn it low and trust the process. Happy training, and may your Magic Steps work their magic! ✨
