Technique Tip: 3 Arabesque Entries

Welcome to your technique tip on Arabesque! In both dance and aerial arts, an arabesque is that lovely position where one leg extends behind while the body balances on the other. This shape can stand alone beautifully and also acts as a gateway into more skills and combinations in the air.

In this tip, we’ll explore three pathways into arabesque from a single foot lock, offering options for beginners through advanced aerialists.

Arabesque Position for Each Entry

The following instructions start from a right foot lock, as shown in the video. When moving into Arabesque, keep your foot lock leg beneath your hip, with the silk positioned across your mid-to-lower back. Avoid letting your supporting leg drift too far forward, as this can push the silk too high on your back or even into your armpit. Remember to lean your back slightly toward the pole of the silk for support rather than away from it.

1. Arabesque Pattern Entry (Beginner)

  • Reach your left hand high on the pole of silk.

  • Pass your right arm under and forward, gripping beneath your left hand with your thumb pointing up.

  • Rotate your shoulders to the front, bending your free leg into a passé position.

  • Turn toward the pole, allowing your left hand to release and re-grab.

  • Extend your free leg behind to reach arabesque.

2. Flamenco Grip Entry (Intermediate)

  • Reach your left hand high on the pole with your shoulder internally rotated and pinky finger facing up.

  • Lean slightly away, passing your free arm through first, followed by your shoulder and head.

  • Bring your elbow behind the pole, lift your free leg into arabesque.

3. Spin Entry (Advanced)

  • Reach the same hand as your locked foot up high on the pole.

  • Rotate outward, guiding the rotating with your free arm.

  • Duck your head under as you pass your shoulder between your extended arm and the pole.

  • Arrive in a flamenco grip with the extended arm and reach your free arm out.

  • Place both hands on the pole, position your foot lock leg under you and extend the free leg behind into arabesque.

Give these level-appropriate entries a try, and enjoy finding the one that feels best for you!
